Saints of old to re-surface

Southampton take on Leicester City at St Mary’s Stadium on Monday night to round off this weekend’s Championship action, and the hosts will be looking to swap over the leadership once more at the top of the league with a win. Southampton’s overall form has been a little patchy in recent matches with two draws (Blackpool and Portsmouth), two wins (Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest) and two losses (Bristol City and Brighton). After such a great start to the season, would the real Southampton stand up please? Well, I think we’ll see the Southampton of the earlier part of the season here as Leicester have also been inconsistent, but you have to bring your ‘A’ game to St Mary’s to get anything off them and I think the east midlanders will have their work cut out here. Saints’ home record stands at 11-1-1 30/9, and is by far the best home record in the Championship with only Birmingham City (6 goals) conceding fewer on home ground. Their leading scorer is striker Rickie Lambert (13 goals) but he’ll be unavailable as he sits out his third and final match due to suspension. However, Do Prado and Adam Lallana (6 goals each, 7 and 5 assists respectively) are both in form and the front pairing is likely to be an unchanged David Connolly (5 goals, 4 assists) and Dean Hammond (1 goal, 1 assist).

Foxes inconsistent

Leicester City are still treading water in the lower half of the division, and have won just once in their last seven matches which was a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace at the turn of the year. The return of manager Nigel Pearson was a strange move anyway following the sacking of Sven Goran-Eriksson, but has not resulted in unheralded success as The Foxes are now eight points adrift of Birmingham City in sixth spot and they look unlikely to make the play-offs right now. Their away record stands at 3-5-4 14/15, and what is worrying is that they have lost at Hull City and Doncaster Rovers who are both susceptible to losing at home and are some way off Southampton’s calibre. Okay, so they beat Nottingham Forest in the cup but let’s face it, anyone is beating Forest at the moment and they face probably their stiffest test yet away to the south coast side. Leading scorer is striker David Nugent (8 goals, 4 assists), along with Scottish midfielder Paul Gallagher (5 goals, 2 assists), Andy King (4 goals, 1 assist) and creative midfielder Richie Wellens (1 goal, 4 assists).

An attacking match in store

Saints won’t want to lose ground on promotion rivals West Ham with the likes of Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, Hull City and Birmingham City breathing down their necks, so I’m backing they score here at good odds despite the absence of Rickie Lambert along with Leicester City also as Jermaine Beckford found his scoring touch against Forest in midweek– Saints to win 2-1 but both teams to score.
