African Cup of Nations match preview: Senegal - Zambia

One of the favorites

The bookies have given Senegal the third best chance to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy (odds 7), after Ivory Coast and Ghana. The Lions of Teranga have qualified with ease from a group with Cameroon (they won 4 points against them) and DR Congo (back-to-back wins) and had a successful preparation campaign for the ACN, with wins over Guinea (4-1) and Sudan (1-0). The last time they have lost in a competitive game was back in September 2008 against Algeria (2-3).

Looking to repeat the 2010 performance

The Copper Bullets are outsiders for the trophy, with the 10th chance (odds 34), but the bookies suggest that they have a good chance to advance to the next stage, being second-favorites in the group. They will be looking to repeat the 2010 campaign, when they entered the quarter-finals, with the same coach at the helms (Renard). They`ve won only one of their 4 pre-ACN friendlies, against India, losing to Nigeria and Angola and drawing with Namibia.

Senegal to start strong

This should be the biggest test for Senegal in the group stage, however, I expect them to start strong and grab a win. They have a very strong roaster, well balanced, with a solid defensive line: Mangane (Rennes), Diawara (Marseille), Sané (Bordeaux), Bayal Sall (St Etienne), Mbengue (Toulouse), Armand Traoré (QPR) and great firepower: Dia (Fenerbahce), Moussa Sow (Lille), Papiss Demba Cissé (Freiburg), Souleymane Camara (Montpelier, Demba Ba (Newcastle United), Dame N`Doye (Copenhagen), while most of the Zambians are playing in Africa, star player Emmanuel Mayuka (Zurich) being one of the exceptions.
