England Championship match preview: Millwall - Birmingham

Just above the bottom three

Millwall take on a revived Birmingham City at their New Den on Saturday afternoon with the hosts hovering dangerously just above the bottom three. Millwall are just two points and one league place above relegation rivals Nottingham Forest as they look to gain an important and vital win over their midlands visitors on Saturday. The Lions however have won only once in their last six which was a 1-0 home win over Portsmouth on Boxing Day which seems an age ago. Recent losses to Hull City, Crystal Palace and fellow strugglers Bristol City have ensured that the London outfit still remain in the dog-fight despite having the best home record out of the teams around them in the lower half of the Championship; 5-5-3 17/10 is not a bad record and the Lions will be hoping their home form is enough to keep them up come May. Indeed, at home, they’ve recently chalked up wins over Doncaster Rovers and Portsmouth along with taking a point off third-placed Cardiff City in mid-December. Their leading scorer is Darius Henderson (9 goals, 3 assists) and he’s supported by former Ipswich midfielder Liam Trotter (5 goals, 4 assists), Jay Simpson (4 goals, 2 assists) and former Bournemouth midfielder Liam Feeney (3 goals, 1 assist).

Winning five and two draws

Take note that Birmingham City haven’t lost to Millwall in the previous seven encounters, winning five and two draws. On that note, Birmingham have now put together a four match unbeaten run recently in the Championship with wins over Blackpool and Ipswich Town on Wednesday night along with draws against West Ham and Peterborough, they still remain unbeaten at St Andrews but it’ll be interesting to see if they can transfer their recent home form into points on the road. With their European participation now over, Blues seem to be a little more focused with the job in hand of reaching the play-offs and if they can take a rare win away at Millwall on Saturday, they could see themselves in the top six if other results go their way. But their away form this season has been the sticking point; 2-3-7 14/20 is the worst away record of all the teams in the top half of the Championship and manager Chris Hughton is only all too aware of the need to improve this record. Injured players are making progress back into the squad though, for example, Jordan Mutch is getting valuable game time under his belt, while fellow midfielder Margaro Gomis has started the last few matches and looks to have settled now. Curtis Davies and Steven Caldwell at the back are forming another solid defensive partnership in the same vein as former defensive duo Dann and Johnson, and are indeed keeping out Liam Ridgewell who is now fit again. Nikola Zigic also bagged a brace in the Ipswich game so I imagine Hughton will stick with him and Marlon King (7 goals, 2 assists) as the front pairing with Burke (5 goals, 8 assists) and Beausejour (1 goal, 4 assists) providing the width.

No push-over

Millwall will be no push-over here, and if Blues do nick it, it will only be by a one goal margin. Too close to call with a result, I’m backing a draw and will take the draw no bet option on Blues as cover.
