English Championship match preview: Hull City - Brighton

Play-off incentive

Hull City go into this match just one place and one point above their opponents tonight Brighton and could break into the play-off places with all three points at The Circle tonight. Hull have produced some encouraging results lately which has kept them on the fringe of the play-offs with wins over Peterborough United, Reading and Bristol City along with draws at home to Doncaster Rovers who are fighting for their Championship lives and automatic promotion chasing Birmingham City away from home last week. The attacking trio of Matty Fryatt, creative midfielder Robert Koren and former Peterborough marksman Aaron Mclean should be enough for Hull to keep their side of the bargain (in terms of scoring at least one goal) with of course the prospect of moving into the top six as added incentive.

Point to prove

Visitors Brighton also have cause for optimism with wins over Peterborough, Leicester City and Leeds United along with draws against Crystal Palace and Millwall which has seen them re-emerge as possible dark horses for a play-off place yet. The players and manager Gus Poyet I’m sure will want to redress the balance after their 1-6 thrashing at Anfield at the weekend in the cup, and have an opportunity to set the record straight within just a few days. The Seagulls also possess one of the most prolific goalscorers in the lower divisions in Craig Mackail-Smith, along with Ashley Barnes, Will Buckley and Mark Noone and of course Sam Vokes who knows his way to goal as well.

There could be goals...

Hull will want to impress their home fans along with wanting a play-off berth, while Brighton will want to show that their weekend cup performance was a one-off and have a point to prove – this points to both teams hitting the back of the net in my opinion at very good odds!
