Cheltenham on a roll

League Two joint leaders Cheltenham Town take on bottom half Bristol Rovers at Whaddon Road on Saturday afternoon with the hosts looking to overtake their automatic promotion rivals Southend United. Cheltenham Town have put together a ten match unbeaten run in the league which has seen them emerge as serious promotion contenders to League One as they currently sit in second place on goal difference. This ten match run has seen them secure wins against Southend United, Oxford United and a draw against Shrewsbury Town; these three part of the top seven at the moment. Their home record stands at 9-2-2 19/6, and along with Shrewsbury Town , possess the best home defensive record in League Two. At the business end they have some key attacking players in Darryl Duffy (7 goals, 3 assists), Kaid Mohamed and James Spencer (both with 6 goals each), Jeff Goulding (4 goals, 3 assists) while Marlon Pack, Luke Summerfield and Josh Low have all chipped in with 3 goals apiece. Their creativity has been mainly supplied by Marlon Pack (6 assists) and Luke Garbutt (5 assists) and there are plenty of options in attack for manager Mark Yates.

Gas poor away from home

Their opponents today, Bristol Rovers currently occupy 18th place and are just six points above the drop zone. Bristol Rovers have won just once in their last ten league matches which was a 2-1 away win at fellow strugglers Hereford United. They also grabbed a point against high-flying Crawley Town at home last weekend but I fancy their away form is not as solid. The Pirates’ away record stands at 3-3-6 15/25, with only second from bottom Plymouth Argyle (30 goals) conceding more on their travels. It’s worth taking note that they’ve lost to most of the top half teams in the division with losses at Crawley Town, Oxford United, Burton Albion and Accrington Stanley along with damaging losses at Bradford City and Barnet. Leading scorer is Matt Harrold (8 goals, 1 assist) but he didn’t feature against Crawley last weekend and is very doubtful for this match. Scott McGleish (5 goals) and Lee Brown (4 goals) have also scored, while Matthew Gill (5 assists) leads the creativity, although again, he didn’t feature last weekend and is likely to be missing again. New boss Mark McGhee will want to mark his first game in charge with a win but realistically may well have to wait until players return to full fitness and knows his squad better.

Cheltenham home win

Cheltenham should really win this one comfortably as The gas have struggled on the road lately – I’ll back The Robins for a straight win either 2-0 or 2-1.
