English Championship match preview: Blackpool - Portsmouth

Momentum set to continue

Blackpool ensured their place in the FA Cup fifth round after comfortably accounting for high-flying League One side Sheffield Wednesday in midweek with an easy 3-0 win to set them up nicely for the visit of lowly Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Seasiders have now broken into the play-off positions and I have no doubt that manager Ian Holloway will be impressing on his players to stay in the top six until May with a view to a possible automatic promotion spot. Blackpool are unbeaten in their last five and their home record stands at 9-3-2 24/10. Recent wins over Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Coventry City and Cardiff City have propelled them into fifth spot, and their momentum should continue again today against Portsmouth. New signing Roman Bednar should come into contention today following his loan move from West Brom, and Ian Holloway has plenty of attacking options open to him with the likes of leading scorer Kevin Phillips (10 goals), Matthew Phillips (6 goals, 3 assists) and Lomana Lua Lua.

Injury worries for Pompey

Portsmouth suffered a heartbreaking 86th minute goal at Birmingham City in midweek which condemned the south coast outfit to their third loss in four matches. Pompey’s away record is not great at all and they have really struggled to get any sort of continuity on the road all season. Just two away wins so far which were at Burnley and Peterborough United, but what is more concerning is their record at teams in the top six; draw at Middlesbrough, 3-4 at West Ham, 2-3 at Cardiff City and the recent 0-1 loss at Birmingham City. Portsmouth also have a few injury worries going into this match with defender Tal Ben Haim having to undergo a late fitness test along with forwards Benjani and Dave Kitson. Influential midfielder David Norris (4 goals, 4 assists) will miss the trip as he hasn’t recovered from a hernia operation, while striker Luke Varney (5 goals) is also sidelined with knee ligaments.

Comfortable home win

Blackpool’s firepower along with Portsmouth’s poor away record should result in a comfortable home win for The Seasiders here and I’ll back them to cover the -1 handicap at a very tempting price indeed.
