Match preview: Zimbru - Okzhetpes 2009-07-02 (UEFA Europa League Qualifiers)
A young side
Zimbru is a team that regularly participates in the European cups qualifiers. It’s true they never managed to enter the group phase, but the experiences they’ve gotten will surely mean a lot to them in the following matches. Zimbru ended the season at the 4th spot, and was pretty behind by the leading Sheriff team. This Chisinau side then brought a lot of young players to the squad, the oldest players are about 25, while most of their regulars are about 20 years old. There are two foreigners in the squad – Ukrainian goalie Voroniuk, and defender Simic from Serbia. Their squad is currently in the preparation period for the new Moldavian championship, and beat Vitorul by 4:1 in their last friendly match. Their club board fired coach Ion Caras just before the end of the last season, and put back Ivan Tabanov, who already coached them between 2005. and 2007. Tabanov knows the situation in the club really well, just like their players and surely won’t have any problems to quickly adapt to working with the “old-new” team. He’ll get great help by Zimbru’s players, as some of them used to play in the Kazakh championship. Striker Sofroni spent two years in Kazakhstan, and will have a lot to say to Tabanov about the way Okzhetpes is playing. Zimbru’s coach stated his team is a favorite in this match and expects a win. He added it would be good to record a convincing triumph in the first leg, as it’s well-known the pitches in Kazakhstan are very bad, so his team will have a hard time in the rematch.
Lost in space
Okzhetpes side has miraculously found themselves in the Europa League qualifiers. They ended as the 9th team in the Kazakh league last year, and just due to the fact the rest of the teams above them in standings were without a UEFA license they got a chance to play. They’re performing quite poorly in the new season as well, currently are in the 10th position in the standings, and in the last eight games in all competitions their record is one win and seven losses. They’re playing pretty bad, and are traveling to Chisinau with very poor chances of doing much. The situation will be even tougher due to absence of the Moldavian Osipenco, who had to leave the squad due to some family issues. The thing is, Kazakh league is a lot “richer” than the Moldavian one due to the oil capital of their club owners. Moldavians gladly come to play there, as it lacks quality but the paychecks are at least twice as high as in the Moldavian clubs. Coach Eduard Glazunov says that even though Zimbru are the favs, he and his boys won’t come with the white flag above their heads. He is hoping for a good result in Chisinau, and sees a chance for his team in the return leg. Beside the abovementioned missing of Ostapenco, Glazunov has no major problems, and will be able to field the strongest lineup, whatever that might be.
The unknowns
None of these two sides can be categorized as the top European teams, but the difference in their reputation is humongous. Zimru are multiple champions in Moldavia, and the team that had the opportunity to feel the atmosphere in the European cups. On the other hand, Okzhetpes is a team founded a few years ago, and this is their first performance in such an important competition. Besides, they were extremely lucky to even get a chance to play in these qualifiers. It all backs the obvious fact about Zimbru being a clear fav, and thus I suggest you a home win. However, the more interesting bet is Zimbru’s win by two or more goals, but since it’s just two pretty unknown sides we’re talking about here, I’ll just satisfy with the Ah -1 bet.
