Match preview: Wolverhampton - QPR 2009-04-18 (England Championship)

So close

Wolves have been at the first position in the Championship for the most of the season and it seems they will finally manage to secure the return to Premier League. They might have had a few letdowns during this season, but Mick McCarthy’s squad has mostly been very consistent and it looks like their investments have paid out. They’re entering this match after a 4-wins streak and if they manage to record another win they will be out of reach to Sheffield United and Cardiff who are third and fourth respectively. Mick McCarthy will again be able to count on Sylvan Ebanks-Blako which will be of great significance for his team. The striker who is the leading Championship scorer with 24 goals scored have missed the last three league matches and it’s probable McCarthy will put him into the starting lineup from the first minute for this important match. He won’t play together with Chris Iwelumo, as the former Colchester striker is still struggling to overcome the knee injury.

You don`t buy success

It’s interesting that at the beginning of the season, QPR were one of the main title candidates in the Championship according to the bookmakers. Injected by millions of pounds, their idea was that QPR simply try to buy success, but as they’ve learned that couldn’t be the case. After firing coach Iain Dowie earlier this season, they now canceled the contract to his replacement Paulo Sousa, so Gareth Ainsworth has been set up as the temporary solution yet again. It seems like the team from Loftus Road will simply have to settle for the place in the mid-table as they’re currently 10th with 60 points won and without any hope of reaching the playoffs for Premiership. Ainsworth could give a chance to Rowan Vin after a few months of break to to leg injury. Heidar Helguson is also hoping to get his place in the starting lineup since he also recovered from an injury.

Can QPR delay Wolves` promotion?

Molineux could be the host of a great party at the end of this match since the Wolves could secure their Premiership promotion if they win even in theory. QPR will not be giving them any favors, their club is in some sort of a transitional period since Sousa left the club and Ainsworth will try everything to prove he is qualified enough to be leading this squad. The nerves could have a high influence on the outcome of this match so a surprise is not excluded. Gareth Ainsworth will know how to motivate his squad, and since they manage to turn the game around in the round against Sheffield Wednesday coming back from 0:2 to win 3:2, we can maybe expect another goal-feast. My suggestion is to bet on the over at some very good odds.
