Match preview: Wolfsburg - Leverkusen 2009-04-18 (Germany 1. Bundesliga)

Everybody believes now

The German public has been neglecting Wolfsburg’s play for quite a long time, putting them along other teams that are not serious title candidates. However, coach Magath and his squad have shut all the mouths with the unforgettable series of 9 consecutive wins which got them to the very top of the standings. They’re currently three points ahead of the second-placed Bayern, but out of all the huge optimism in the Volkswagen town comes from their terrific performances their team has been showing lately. Last week they won by tight 2:1 away at Moenchengladbach. But, everyone that has been watching that game will know that Wolsfburg have been completely dominant all throughout, with their striker missing plenty of excellent goal-scoring chances. Generally speaking, that’s something that offensive conception of play is what characterizes their game the best. Magath has found excellent players in the likes of strikers Grafite and Dzeko, who have team’s main game creator Misimovic right behind them. No defense in Bundesliga has a solution for Wolfsburg’s attack, and it ain’t a surprise that “The Greens” are the most efficient Bundesliga team this season. They have been lucky with the injury list lately as well, as no important players are missing so Magath will have the opportunity to field the same squad from the last four matches. Magath announced the following formation: Benaglio - Pekarik, Simunek, Barzagli, M. Schäfer - Josué - Riether, Gentner - Misimovic - Grafite, Dzeko.

A mentality problem

It seems like Leverkusen have one of the most quality teams in the league but they have hard time proving it. They’re excellent away from home, maybe the best out of all Bundesliga teams. However, they’re playing horrible at home, losing points to much weaker sides. They’re playing in Duesseldorf in this part of the season due to their BayArena stadium being remodeled, but that can only be a partial excuse as they were also playing average at home in the first part of the season. Team manager Voeller says that it’s all in player’s heads and they’re lacking winning mentality, which once used to be the trade mark of all German squads. Voeller is stating the fact that Leverkusen haven’t won a single match unless they scored first. If such a losing mentality doesn’t change, the “Factory Squad” will never be a great time, no matter the quality some of their individuals have. They’re currently ninth on the table and their hopes of qualifying into one of the European competitions for the next season are only a fantasy at the moment. Still, their chance still exists and that is through DFB Cup. They are in the semis, and will face Mainz, who is a Zweite Bundesliga side on Wednesday. Coach Labbadia doesn’t have too many squad problems. Castro has recovered but won’t start the match, and Augusto and Vidal should take their place in the midfield, since they’re better in their defensive tasks. The following lineup is expected: R. Adler - Henrique, M. Friedrich, Sinkiewicz, Kadlec - Rolfes - Renato Augusto, Vidal, Barnetta - Helmes, Kießling

The great series continues

This game should be a true spectacle. It’s a meeting between the leading Bundesliga squad, who also has a best home record in the league, against a very attractive opponent that is the most successful “guest” in Bundesliga. We can except a real fireworks of shots, chances and goals. Still, there is no doubt in my mind that Wolfsburg is a clear favorite. They’re in great shape, and have a lot more motives too. Leverkusen will surely not give this match away easily, but they see their chance in the Cup, and the game against Mainz is a lot more significant for them right now, so they won’t enter the game against the league leaders with their full strength. I believe Wolfsburg will record yet another win, and come a step closer to their first Bundesliga title.
