Match preview: Swansea - Bristol_City 2009-04-18 (England Championship)

A pleasant surprise

Swansea are one of the pleasant surprises this season and Roberto Martinez’s team have gotten the sympathies by some neutral fans as well. After convincingly walking through League One last season, many people had certain expectations at their Liberty Stadium, but nobody expected they would have such a successful season. Their style of play impressed all, and after a win over Barnsley last Monday they have full right to hope to be in the promotion playoffs. There are only three matches before the end of the season and that will be pretty hard as four points separate them from Burnley, but surpassing them definitely isn’t impossible. They celebrated in the last two matches, and haven’t been defeated in the last four so it could be said they’re in a good form at the end of the season. Swansea don’t have too many injury concerns before this clash, only Angel Rangel is under question mark so Martinez can pretty-much count on his best players.

The season is over for Bristol

This season is practically over for Bristol City, even though they’re only a few places below their today’s rivals, they’re behind the sixth-placed Burnley by as many as 9 points which means they won’t be able to repeat their ending from the last season. Some might think that this has been a disappointing season for City, but it should be taken into account that many times that just got promoted usually fight to avoid relegation, so it could be said they’re one stable Championship side now. Although they don’t have many motives before this match, Gary Johnson wants his team to play professionally until the end and try to snatch a win or two, since the last time they beat someone was on March 10th. Liam Fontaine and Jamie McAllister will return to the lineup, since they’ve successfully recovered from injuries. Adriano Basso should also play but it’s a question if he can make all 90 minutes, while Bradley Orr will skip this match due to suspension.

Bigger motives will decide

Just a few weeks ago, it seemed that this match would decide about the playoff participants, however, now only one of the teams is fighting for the 6th place. Bristol City’s have vanished thanks to the poor form from the last couple of weeks, while Swansea still have a chance since they’re only behind Burnley by four points. Swansea have played good in the past few rounds and it is expected they repeat such form today as well and beat a team that is playing without any kind of motivation.
