Match preview: Portland - Houston 2009-04-19 (NBA)

They surprised the whole West

Portland have been one of the main "garbage cans" in the Western Conference until a few seasons ago, being usually at the rock bottom in the standings, but this year they`re playing one of the best seasons in their recent history and shared the 2nd place in the West together with Denver and San Antonio. The main star of their team is of course Brandon Roy, team`s best scorer with 22.6 ppg, best "stealer", FT shooter, and the leader in assists. Beside him, two shooters Aldridge and Blake have "blossomed", being the leading 2-pt and 3-pt FG shooters on the team respectively and who represent a really big threat to their opponents on a good day. Then, there is a double-threat on the post coming from still unfulfilled college giant Greg Oden, as well as terrific Joel Przybilla, best rebounder and blocker of Portland. The Blazers do have a home-court advantage in the playoffs and will try to get as far as possible carried by their frenetic fans, but they`re already facing an extremely experienced Houston side at the start of their playoff campaign.

McGrady`s absence is not felt at all

Houston obviously didn`t have many problems with the absence of his best scorer Tracy McGrady in the 2nd part of the season, moreover, they achieved great success by recording a phenomenal winning streak that secured them the PO spot, finishing regular season just one spot below Portland in the West. The best Chinese basketball player in this country`s history then of course took over the role of leader in the Rockets and used his great physicals to make every opposing team struggle against Houston when he was on the court. Artest and Battier are the team`s best defenders, who should together with Ming`s blocks and Scola`s on-court mobility could stop any team under the basket. If we add Landry or Van Wafer to that group, we get one really dangerous squad, that will surely cause plenty of trouble to the Blazers and won`t allow the guys from Oregon to advance easily.

Houston have more quality

One phenomenal thing about this bet is that Houston is one very serious team full of hard-working individuals who play fantastic defense, but are aware they will have to go all-offensive in this clash as all the tickets to the next round are open and usually teams don`t play some extraordinarily tough defense in the first playoff matches, but mostly rely on their offensive skills. It`s also interesting Portland is the leading NBA`s offensive rebounding team, while Houston is the 2nd one in the defensive rebounds category. What`s even more interesting is that Houston won 8 out of their last 10 mutual clashes, and IMO are unjustifiably set as big underdogs as they possess great quality and are capable of stopping Roy, who is the main guy in Portland, and without his contribution their team play is falling apart. Of course, there will be lot of room for Artest, Brooks, and Battier in offense since Yao will probably be double-teamed, so I expect lots of long-range and 3-pt shots, as well as fast-breaks and steals so we are ought to see one pretty fast-paced game where such a low total is really unrealistically set. My main bet is the over, also smaller stakes on Houston ML.
