Match preview: Panellinios - Benetton 2010-02-09 (Eurocup)
Doing great
Panellinios is playing above expectations this season in Europe and are currently sharing 2nd place in their top 16 group with a win and a loss after the first 2 rounds. They showed their great home form (unbeaten since the beginning of the season in EC), by crushing Brose Baskets, just to lose against tough Bilbao on the road last week. They also played very decent against defending EL champs Panathinaikos last Saturday in the domestic championship, but the quality difference was very visible and they really lacked some major boost on the offensive end as their main guard Smith was out, and is questionable for this match as well due to a leg injury he suffered last week in EC. Panellinios is, however, a great shooting team from the 3-point line with 51% in the first two games of top 16, which is the most of all teams. However, they`re pretty low-scoring in general as their inside game isn`t all that great.
Hopeless
Benetton isn`t anywhere near the team they used to be some ten years ago, and not much quality has remained in this team except the famous brand name they`re still carrying. They barely passed to top 16 thanks to some lucky results in their group, but their play is far from convincing and especially on the road they usually show no spirit, their team chemistry is very bad and the connection between the players is not existing. Their best player by far is Neal, who is leading their play, while Kus and Rivers usually take the most shots. They have Nicevic and Wallace in the paint, who are pretty versatile but lack strength and with big man Hukic being out, this team becomes even more limited. They lost both of the games in top 16 so far with ease, while they lost to Lottomatica in their domestic league by almost 30 points during the weekend, which is yet another proof of how poor they`re on the road.
The Greeks are better
I have no doubts here and expect an easy win for Panellinios, who possess more quality than Benetton despite the fact they will probably be without their leading guard Smith. On the other hand, Benetton is just horrible this season and it`s a miracle how they are even in this top 16, as their performances very often really bad with the players showing no fighting spirit and lack of interest on the court. Panellinios should cover this spread but this time I`ll rather choose a bit shorter halftime spread as I think the Greeks will demolish them from all positions early and keep increasing the lead till the end. Panellinios is currently at least one class better than their visitors and I expect that to be clearly seen on the court. GL.
