Match preview: Murray - Ferrero 2009-07-01 (ATP Wimbledon)

Whole Britain on its feet

Andy Murray is playing some fantastic season in the last year or so. That also refers to the grass courts, where he is still unharmed this season. He recorded 9 consecutive wins on this surface after Roland Garros was over, firstly winning the home tournament in Queens, beating Seppi, Garcia Lopez, Fish, Ferrero and Blake in the finals. His grass form is probably at its peak right now, which proves the fact he won the Queens without a set lost. Now, at the great Wimbledon he has a very difficult job of justifying the home crowd expectations. They’re all giving him an incredible support, giving him the wings to every win. The only major problems he faced so far were against great Stan Wawrinka, who he defeated in five sets. With that win he tied his best result at Wimbledon, and of course nobody expects him to stop yet, as he, and the whole U.K. have the ambitions of winning the title. U.K. hasn’t had such a great player in a while, so all eyes are set on the 22-yr old Murray, and a true Andymonium was created even before this Grand Slam started.

Small chances given

Juan Carlos Ferrero is just a step away from tying his best result at this Grand Slam, which is the semifinals. He will be facing the home player, almost unbeatable Andy Murray. Clay courts have always been something he preferred more, even managing to win Roland Garros once in his long career. He hasn’t recorded too many impressive results on grass, something people would never expected from a former number one in the world. He is currently 69th in the rankings, but once used to be the first, and the last time that was the case was back on September 8th, 2003. Everyone was surprised by the fact this 29-yr old Spaniard reached the semifinals at the pre-Wimby tournament in Queens. He had a very tough obstacle there in the like of the first seed and home player, Andy Murray. He lost pretty convincingly (6:2, 6:4), but that didn’t prevent him from continuing his solid play on grass. So far he’s had some really tough opponents at Wimbledon, but he dealt with them quite solid. Firstly he convincingly defeated both Youzhny and Santoro, just to face a real threat against Fernando Gonzalez, who took him to five sets. However, the Spaniard dealt with him eventually, winning the fifth set by 6:4 and ensuring the 4th round. Already warmed-up Frenchie Simon awaited him there, but to everyone’s surprise, Ferrero defeated him quite fast in straight sets (7:6, 6:3, 6:2). He is aware who his next obstacle on the way to the semifinals and his best career result regarding grass surfaces is. But, Ferrero would’ve never even been a champion if he didn’t have the faith, so he will surely not give up easily and will do his best to record a big upset.

Narrow Murray`s win

The home player, Andy Murray, with a few doubts is a big fav in this clash. In the last match against Wawrinka he proved that with decent odds given, money can surely be placed on him. I can freely claim that Murray will record a win which should never come in question with a good display of his. However, if Wawrinka could take as many as two sets, I don’t see a reason why the former world number one, Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is in great form at the moment, couldn’t steal at least one. The Spaniard will surely not give up, he’ll play his best and I hope he will show the form from the previous matches. The bookies set quite a low total for this match considering it’s the quarterfinals and we’ve got to use that opportunity. So, my prediction is the following: Murray will win at the end, but it will not be as easy as the bookies predict.
