Match preview: Lithuania - Serbia 2009-10-14 (WC Qualifiers)

Poor

Lithuania is playing very poor during these qualifiers, and haven`t shown any quality since their first match in the group and a great away win against Romania. Since then, they`ve been winless away from home, even including the loss to Faroe Islands about a month ago, which surely has to be one of the most embarrassing results in their national team history. They also lost the last two home matches, against France and Romania respectively, so their coach Cuceiro surely can`t be too optimistic before the clash with a much stronger opponent. They lost to weakened Austria by 2:1 a few days ago, but it has to be mentioned Lithuania also has a few important missings, especially in defense where players like Skerla, Zaliukas or Mikoliunas will all be sidelined due to injuries.

Happiness

The Serbs have directly qualified to the World Cup for the first time since they became independent country, and the whole country is just really happy about this great success. There has been a huge celebration on the streets of every Serbian town after their astonishing 5:0 against neighboring Romania, which booked their tickets to South Africa next year. Coach Radomir Antic finally proved how important is to have such a great expert on the bench of your team, and the players were able to show their real potential during these qualifiers which resulted in the first place in the group. For this clash Stankovic, Vidic and probably Kuzmanovic won`t play for sure, but most of the other players will be ready and coach Antic certainly believes they will have a great chance of winning this last match and improving the team coefficient in order to enter the first-seed pool for the future draw in the EC qualifiers.

Away win is a must

Both sides haven`t got too many motives before this game. Actually, Lithuania has none except to try and please their fans for the poor results in these qualifiers. However, their form is in a huge downtrend, they lost the last two home matches, while the only away win was recorded in the first round of the qualifiers against Romania, lately even managing to lose to Faroe Islands. Serbia has got too much quality and depth for Lithuania, even if a few important players will be missing for them. Lithuania, however, can`t replace their absences as the subs are mostly from their domestic league which has a very low quality. The Serbs all announced they need this win badly in order to become first-seeds in the UEFA EC qualifiers, and I`m sure they have got more than enough power to once again easily dispose the Lithuanians.
