Match preview: Indianapolis - New_Orleans 2010-02-08 (NFL Superbowl)

Repeat history

The Colts have been known as a team that drops down in the crunch time and ruin their good results from the regular season in the playoffs for a long time. They shut everyone’s mouth after a win in the Superbowl 41, and proved they have the necessary toughness. Now they will have a chance to prove that again and show they’re the best team in the NFL. They’ve played outstanding for the entire season and proved the experts that their “one-dimensional” offense if it’s played perfectly can bring the desired results. They’ve based their entire game on the passing of their QB Manning and they limited their running to a minimum. Words shouldn’t be spent on describing Manning’s qualities. He was again named the league MVP and no team found a way to stop him. Their receivers’ corpus was also at a very high level. TE Clark and WR Wayne, Garcon, Collie and injured Gonzales caught numerous amounts of passes and scored a bunch of TDs. Beside their excellent offensive performance, the Colts have been very tough in defense as well. Pair of DE Freeney and Mathis have been a true nightmare for the opposing QBs. Their performance will have extreme significance in the Superbowl cause if they manage to disturb Saints’ QB Brees, half of the job will be done. Indianapolis’ coach is modest Jim Caldwell, who will be having his first season as the main coach. He did his job in the best way possible, and he needs only one more step to enter history. The Colts are entering the finals as favorites and surely won’t be satisfied if they don’t win yet another title. Their health situation is a bit worrying as DE Freeney is injured, but their best WR Wayne also got hurt in the last practice on Friday. However, it is announced both will be fit for the match and take their positions from the start.

Making a debut

New Orleans squad is in the NFL Superbowl for the first time. This franchise has had modest results for years and were never having an opportunity to come this far. However, there’s no doubt they totally deserved to be at the very end this season. They’ve played outstanding, had a 13-3 record and thanks to some terrific performances in the playoffs, managed to defeat Arizona and Minnesota. Now they will face the toughest obstacle, as the Colts are surely the strongest rival they could’ve ever gotten. The Saints are basing their game on extraordinary offense. They were the most efficient side in the season with an average of 31.9 points per match. QB Brees has had the best rating out of all QBs – 109.8, throwing 4388 yards and 34 TDs. Those are some really impressive numbers, but that won’t be worth much if Brees doesn’t play at the necessary level in the last game of the season. Beside Brees, NO has got a few more real jewels in the offense: WR Colston, TE Shockey, RB Thomas and Bush. What can be a bit worrying for the Saints’ fans is the fact their defense isn’t the best one around and is ranked as the 20th with 21.3 points received per game. However, they managed to win the ball 39 times after the opposition errors, managing to do it 7 times in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see what kind of pressure the Saints will be since they are playing one such important match for the first time. If they succeed to surpass the anxiousness, they will surely be at least an equal rival to the favored Colts.

All that will matter is heart and brain

Superbowl is one of the greatest sporting events on the planet This Sunday night we will surely witness a great spectacle. This one is especially promising, as we’ll be seeing two extremely attractive offensive-minded sides. There are no true favorites for a win, as we’ve seen everything’s possible many times already. The Saints have my sympathies, who played the most attractive football during the entire season. However, the brain indicates the Colts are the more powerful team. Not only they’ve got Manning, but also somewhat better defense who can bring the necessary advantage. Per usual, I’ll be supporting the weaker team but my bet will be Indianapolis to cover as they have shown the most of all this season after all.
