Match preview: Hibernians - Mogren 2009-06-30 (Champions League qualifiers)

Hibernians side from Malta are one of the most successful teams from this Mediterranean island with as many as 10 championships, 7 cup titles and two Super cup trophies. They were founded back in 1922. and are also the team that never relegated from their premier league, which makes them the only such side in their football history. They won the title last season with two points ahead of Valletta, drawing 0:0 to them in the last round which was enough to win the championship. Hibernians’ coach Mark Miller has only four foreigners at his disposition, one Bulgarian, Uruguayan, Nigerian and Argentinean each, but their main players are the home team nationals, experienced goalie Muscat, and strikers Scerri and Cohen.

Coming to get a win

Mogren squad from an Adriatic coastal town of Budva, will have the opportunity to fight for Champions league for the first time in their history. A few seasons ago they promoted to Montenegrin first division and ever since things started going great for them. Considering the fact that the rich Russian businessmen have invested into that area buying and building hotels and other tourist infrastructure in the town they’re at, it’s natural they’re gonna want to have a decent football team as well. So, for the start, they hired a few players out of whom the most famous one is Vladimir Vujovic, who was hired for about 1m euros. There are a few solid names there, such as striker Cetkovic, who unsuccessfully ended his episode in Partizan, as well as former Banat’s midfielder Stojakovic.

Chances on both ends

I wouldn’t agree with the majority of the people who have lots of confidence about a straight AW here, primarily cause of the fact they’re not super strong squad, but a team that suffered many changes during this transfer period and it’s still not known whether those changes will help them or not. Mogren are usually playing offensive, and I’m sure the Montenegrins will come to Malta with the goal of scoring a goal as soon possible and maybe ensure a good advantage at the start of the match already. However, the final outcome for me here is very unpredictable since Hibernians surely have the quality to at least draw the match at home against a team such as Mogren, since they do have a lot of experienced players in their squad eager to get a good result in Europe. The most realistic bet here is IMO over 2.5 as I think that both sides will play with the goal of outscoring their opponent and for a goal more so we’ll be watching an open game in this leg with the final outcomes like 1:2, 2:2 or maybe even a home win, with a necessary goal for the visitors.
