Match preview: Chelsea - Arsenal 2010-02-07 (English Premier)

The first spot in danger

Carlo Ancelotti’s players are no longer safe at the top of the tables. Manchester United has used the weaknesses of the Blus, who drew 3 times in the previous 7 matches. Many have believed that Chelsea would struggle only during the African cup of Nations, as they had many players playing for their national teams over there. However, “the Blues” didn’t have major problems and played pretty well. Now all the players except Essien are back, as he is again seriously injured while playing for his national team. There are no other injury concerns, so Ancelotti will field the strongest lineup. Their performances at Stamford Bridge have been fascinating this season as they recorded as many as 11 wins, with only one draw (3:3 vs. Everton). Besides, Chelsea possess maybe the most quality defense in the world, so they conceded only 20 goals so far this season in the EPL, and considering the playing style they’re using that’s very little. The big derby is arriving at the right moment, so their motivation will be at a high level. I expect them to put up yet another good performance, who will probably try to impose their style on the opponent and outplay the big rival. Everything but a win would be disappointing for the Blues, who would then lose the leading spot in the tables, which they’ve been holding onto for so long. Their lineup will look like the following: Cech - Ivanović, A. Cole, Carvalho, Terry - Mikel, Ballack, Lampard, Deco - Anelka, Drogba.

The Gunners are backing down

Problems with results have struck Arsene Wenger’s squad, which everybody surely noticed already. Arsenal’s impotence was felt primarily at the game against Manchester United last weekend. The Red Devils not only outplayed them physically, but also humiliated them with the final score. It’s been a while since Wenger’s players showed such lack of power and collapsed like that in front of their fans. They fully disappointed at the Emirates stadium so it’s hard to expect they can put up a good performance at the unconquerable Stamford Bridge. Convincing loss to Manchester obviously wasn’t an accident as they also got eliminated from the FA Cup to Stoke (3:1). They settled for one point in Birmingham afterwards, where the hosting Villa held them to a goalless draw. At one point, I’ve gotten an impression that Arsenal could’ve caused some major upset in the top of the tables, but after just a couple of games, I’ve lost confidence about this side as they’re slowly backing down and are settling for little. The kids from the Emirates stadium will hardly bounce back anytime soon, and I believe they will record yet another defeat here. They still have got some missings, so Wenger will use the following, mixed lineup: Almunia - Sagna, Clichy, Gallas, Vermaelen - Song, Fabregas, Diaby - Rosicky, Arshavin - Bendtner.

City derby to the Blues

Chelsea is an absolute favorite in this game. Although it’s the big London derby we’re talking about, I’m fully confident about a win of the hosting Blues. Arsenal is in major result crisis, and convincing loss to MU at their Emirates stadium in the previous round, made things only worse. It’s hard to expect they wake up after a streak of bad results, and do well at the unconquerable Stamford Bridge. Carlo Ancelotti’s players are in top shape and I believe they will demonstrate their power against the city rival Arsenal today. Everything but a home win would be a big surprise for me.
