Match preview: Bray - Bohemians 2009-07-03 (Irish Premier Division)

Rock bottom

Bray Wanderers side is the last-placed team in the Irish Eircom Division after first 17 rounds has been played. The start of the season didn’t indicate such a form at all. In the first five rounds, they recorded one win and three draws, so everybody in their club was hoping they will have a calm season this year. Unfortunately for them, such a thing didn’t happen and Bray are ahead of a very tough survival battle with an uncertain outcome. Their form has been catastrophic lately, drawing once and losing five times. While their home performances can get a passing grade, they’re totally desperate on the road, losing points on the regular basis. In their nine away matches, they only scored four goals, being the worst in the league. Coach Gormley says it’s still early to rate their season, and there is a lot to be played. He admitted his club is playing bad away, but adds their performances at the Carlisle Ground are pretty decent, and expects them to improve in all possible way in the following rounds. Anyways, even though they’re last, they’re only five points away from the fifth spot. Gormley said that they’ll be hosting the best side in Ireland this Friday, and only if they give 100% of their capabilities they might have certain chances in that match. There are no major squad problems, so a following lineup is expected: Chris O`Connor, Derek Pender, Dane Massey, Dave Mulcahy, Stephen Brennan, Gareth Coughlan, Paddy Kavanagh, Daryl Robson, David O’Neill, Paul Byrne, Gary McCabe.

Still way below the expectations

Regardless of the fact they’re currently first in the standings, Bohemians side isn’t putting up the performances everybody expects to see from them. Maybe the players themselves are guilty for such high expectations due to their outstanding form from the last season, when they won the title being 19 points ahead of the second team. Now they’re only a point ahead of second-placed Derry, and the performances they’ve been displaying – especially on the road, give their fans reasons to worry. They’re still merciless at their home Dalymount Park with the 7-1-1 record, but away they’re pretty unconvincing having only 4-1-3. Coach Pat Fenlon said his main task is to increase his players’ confidence before their away matches cause without good away form, it will be very hard to win the title. Their scoring efficiency is also a problem for the Irish champs. Beside phenomenal Byrne, who scored 14 goals in 7 matches, no other forward showed much. Crowe and Fenn are totally out of form it seems, while Murphy and Brennan don’t have the qualities necessary to play on this level. However, despite all these problems, Bohemians are on a very nice run of results, winning their last four out of five league matches, not conceding a single goal in all those wins. They’re entering this clash as huge favs, but Fenlon is still asking for caution. Bohs’ coach said that Bray is a very hard-working young side, playing really solid at home, and he’s sure that the Bray youngsters won’t show respect to his “stars”. Bohemians side will be complete, only Murphy’s status is questionable after an injury he suffered in one of their latest practices. The lineup should look like this: B Murphy; Heary, Shelley, Oman, Powell; Ndo, Deegan, Cronin, Brennan; J Byrne, Crowe.

Confirmation of the good reputation

Bohemians are the best team in Ireland by far, and they surely won’t have problems to confirm that. Although Bray are pretty tough nut to crack at home, I think they won’t succeed to deal with a lot more quality the visiting team has. The hosts won’t be able to stop Byrne who became the nightmare for all league’s defenses. I expect an easy Bohs win, and my suggestion is a bet on the AW with AH. It’s also worth looking for a clean sheet bet and Bohemians not to concede. Good luck…
