Match preview: Nadal - Monfils 2010-05-14 (ATP Masters Madrid)

Slowed down

Rafael Nadal is defending his Madrid Masters finals but he is definitely not doing it in a very convincing fashion. Two easy opponents at a first sight, Dolgopolov and Isner, gave Nadal much more of a hassle than he needed, and it could be said he kind of slowed down after playing really well on clay in the past few tournaments, during which he dropped only one set in total. He didn`t drop a set here either, but he just wasn`t on his well-known convincing level in both of the matches, maybe underestimating Dolgopolov in the first match (sounds funny for Nadal to be doing that, but he did), and not being able to defend from Isner`s powerful serves. The match against Monfils is a situation he will know how to handle, and that`s why I expect him to again return back to his ultra-aggressive tennis and shows no mercy at all as he needs to save some energy before the semis and the finals. bet now

Not impressive

Gael Monfils is usually starting out pretty slow on the clay courts, and similarly to the previous season, he again played only one tournie before RG, where he always tries his best in front of the home crowd. Last year he got knocked out in the first round of Monte Carlo, while this time he already passed 3 rounds in Madrid, not having much trouble against countryman Robert in the first round, while Petzschner retired at the start of the match. He had huge problems and was close to lose against Garcia-Lopez yesterday, playing one very tough match and missing a bunch of break points. He wasn`t stable in his game at all, and is not in top shape yet, so I believe he hasn`t got much to hope for in these quarterfinals. online betting

I don`t see a long match here. It`s true that Monfils is a huge fighter but right now he is in no competitive shape to match Nadal, like he did on hard at USO last year for example. And even there, he lasted for one set only, and was dead tired after that, with Nadal just finishing him off in the remaining three sets. Here I think Nadal will step up with his game and improve his performances, while Monfils right now isn`t playing too well, struggling with his serve and isn`t too lethal in the rallies so I see a lot of points for Nadal on Monfils` service games and at least one break in each of the sets, which should result in this bet being won.
