Feliciano Lopez has honestly never impressed me on the court. I dislike his soft style, where he heavily relies on the serve, and then usually just plays slices in order to spend as least amount of energy as possible, while his occasional forehands most often don`t represent much of a threat for his opponents. Lopez is one of the rare Spanish players who prefers playing on faster surfaces due to some of the abovementioned characteristics, but isn`t feeling uncomfortable on clay either. He is in my opinion a player that doesn`t deserve to even be in top 50. Maybe somewhere around there at his best. This year he managed to win one title, but it was at a weak tournie in Johannesburg where he didn`t have too many serious opponents, while most often he rarely passed more than 2 or 3 rounds in every tournie he`s played at, and I would say he is actually in a much worse shape than he was last season. He dislikes this time of the year and is usually just slacking in his matches on clay. Luckily for him, his first serious opponent, Andy Roddick withdrew, and was replaced by lucky loser Hernandez, who is in horrible shape, so Lopez won without many problems. Ernests Gulbis has finally decided to start showing his full potential. We`ve all known that this guy possessed great talent in the past, but he rarely showed it, as he was too preoccupied with the off-court activities as a result of the fame around him, instead of focusing on what he knows best - playing tennis. Since this clay-court season began, he clearly started playing better, and personally admitted he was spending more time in the practices, so the results were immediately visible. He played terrific both in Barcelona and in Rome, where he was barely stopped in the semis by Nadal in 3 tough sets, showing some extremely aggressive and determined performances. These two guys have met twice, and Lopez won their first match played last year, when Gulbis was still partying and not caring much about playing good tennis, but their second and last encounter took place very recently at the Rome Masters, where Gulbis took care of Lopez without many problems, struggling to control the match in the first set, but in the second set Lopez`s level of play significantly dropped and Gulbis crushed him till the end. This time I think Gulbis will not wait for the tie break and will attack Lopez`s serve as early as possible and I do expect to see Gulbis break him and finishing the first set before tiebreak, while in the second I expect unmotivated Lopez to again bow down in front of Gulbis` aggressive approach and end the match quickly.
